Do notifications work in response to events caused by automation rules?

It's documented that you’ll get notifications when…

  • You are assigned to a checklist item.

(And for many other reasons as well, of course!)

However, I observe this behavior when I manually assign someone to a checklist item only. I do NOT see this behavior when my automation rule assigns someone to a checklist item.

Is this a known limitation of automation and notifications?

Hello @M

Welcome to the community. I have got automation rules that send out emails.

You may want to confirm who the rule actor is in context of the notification scheme in the issue.

Check the Automation rule's audit log to see if there are any errors as well

Thanks @Graham Twine

I wasn't aware that automation rules keep automation logs, so thanks for this tip! (For others who aren't aware of this, you'll find the automation log for a given Rule by clicking the small 'lightbulb'(?) icon just to the right of the 'garbage can' icon at top of the Rule.)

Alas, I see not errors in automation log though.

These are my relevant Rules:

when the "Submit" item is checked in a checklist named "Loan checklist", add item "Provide lab approval" to checklist "Loan checklist", and move the card to the top of list "Submitted"

when an item starting with "Provide lab approval" is added to checklist "Loan checklist", assign the item to member @david

And here's what I see in the automation log for the second Rule:

Wednesday, June 7, 2023 8:19 AM

Running automation on board Asset Requests.

Added member DAVID to a checklist item in card https://trello.com/c/xxxxxxx.

The automation finished running.

Just to be clear - I have no explicit Rule to send out emails. My assumption is that Trello will simply send emails automatically because "you’ll get notifications when… You are assigned to a checklist item", regardless of HOW you are assigned a checklist item (i.e. manually vs. a Rule like my rule above). Is this assumption correct?

Also, could you say some more about "You may want to confirm who the rule actor is in context of the notification scheme in the issue."? I'm not sure what this means.
