Creation of relationships between cards (parent / childs / ...)

Julien Ollivier January 28, 2025

Hello everyone,

I would like to create relationships between cards on the same board (or across multiple boards).

I tried a free Power-Up called "Card Relationships for Trello," but it cannot load the current cards on my board. In other words, it’s useless for my case.

Do you know of a better option—first, one that is stable and functional, and second, an official Atlassian Power-Up? Or any other way to achieve the creation of relationships between cards?

Thanks!

It depends on what you mean. What kind of behavior would you like to see this parent/child relationship enable you to do? Is it purely visual, or is there further behavior you'd like to see? Do you want to be able to see a parent card from its children, children cards from its parent, or both?

Let's take the example that you want to be able to see the children cards of a parent card ONLY.

You could attach the child card via the child card's link to the parent card.

Now, on the parent card, all children will be visible as attached cards on the parent card. However, the children will not show their parent card.

If you clarify your intention, I could perhaps help more.

Behavior: Visual

I’d like to establish parent/child relationships between cards, allowing me to switch to a tree-like view (e.g., an organizational chart or a family tree). Each card can simultaneously serve as both a parent and a child, meaning the chart can branch out in multiple directions, not just two lines / layers.

I don’t necessarily need to see the parent card within the child card (such as a clickable link). Essentially, I’m looking for a Trello Power-Up similar to “Card Relationships for Trello” that actually functions. The idea is to define child cards directly on each card, and later be able to switch from a table layout to a family tree layout.

Does that make sense?

Thanks in advance!

@Julien Ollivier

From my limited testing and understanding of the Power Up, it seems like there is some sort of bug going on. I was unable to establish new or existing Child relationships. I noticed that Chrome was reporting errors, first involving the server rejecting the requests with a 429 error (too many requests). After that, various errors were reported. My suspicion is that there is some sort of error with that specific Power Up's code, possibly some sort of accidental infinite loop, or that there is an issue with their servers.

I could be wrong, especially about the specifics, but it appears to me that the Power Up itself is the issue, and that the developers of the Power Up could fix it.

Natively, without designing your own custom solution using Trello's API, I'm not sure how you could achieve a tree-like visual interface. The Power Up does seem to be the way to go, but the developers need to fix the bug so that you can use it.

I found other similar Power Ups, so it looks like there may be a solution out there for you. I just never recommend 3rd party software as a personal rule, so check out some of those other options.

If you want a custom solution designed for you...are you hiring? Haha!

All the best! Let me know how it goes!
