I have a couple of automations that will create a new card every day with a checklist that has a set of to-do items that my team needs to complete, however, whenever the card is archived, trello is then unable to run the calendar rule that creates a new card at a given time because it can't find the mentioned checklist.
Is this a bug, a lack of a feature, or is there something I'm doing wrong? I'd like the automation to create a new card every day with the same checklist, and for that card to be archived every day after it's fully completed.
I think you have two options
Personally I prefer method one as you can update the template card if your checklist needs to be modified
Before archiving the card, open it, click share and grab the card link
Then create a rule that references that card directly
I will check this out! Thank you so much! Such a shame we can't just keep checklist templates.

In general, the automation works on open cards. Archived cards are closed and therefore are not processed.
