Cant access a board despite having signed up and confirmed email address

One thing worth trying, if you are able to is to ask the person who shared the board with you to share an invite link:
Then access the board by the link.
In terms of why it didn't work the other way round, you could ask them to hover over the pending invite and see the exact name of the user and make sure it is your one. Did you ever have more than 1 account attached to different email addresses? It is quite easy to add the wrong person on Trello
