Can a custom date field trigger an action once the date has passed?

Mike Stevens April 16, 2023

Ahoy all,

We've got a custom date field on our cards called 'Event Date', and I'd like to have it trigger an action such as a comment on the card or a message to Slack, etc.

The idea is that the moment the date has passed, it triggers an action.

There are a lot of options in the custom fields automations, but none of them stand out to me as the solution for this. I see things like 'completed' and 'checked' and so on, but short of experimenting with them, they don't strike me as the right options for this job.

I'm sure I'm missing something obvious.

Any help appreciated!

Hi Mike,

Sharing with you an existing suggestion as we've had other users interested in this as well. I’ve added you as a “+1” to our existing suggestion, which you can access here: TRELLO-541: As a Trello Premium user, I'd like to create triggers for Due Date Automations based on Date Custom Fields

I have also added this ticket as an internal comment to this report so that way our engineering team can reference to it and also use it to help align priority. I would also recommend you to visit that suggestion, log in with your Atlassian account, and click Start watching this issue on the right panel. You can also comment with your use case and why you think this suggestion is important. This will help our product and engineering team understand more about which functionalities our users are interested in. Also, when the ticket is updated by our product team, you'll be notified via email.

You can learn more about this by reading our Implementation of New Features Policy:

I hope this helps, but let us know if you have any questions!

Thanks @Mutya A

I have commented with a link to the above solution.

@Brittany Joiner  and I know and love Trello automation (probably) more than anyone else in the world .  We'd love to sync up with feedback, ideas and to test anything you have for automation 😁

You can only trigger such command on the due date of the card but you can make it work by doing,

When the "Event Date" custom field is set, set the due date to {customfieldvalue}

and then by using a due date command:

Thanks for the answer, fellow Mike! So you're suggesting, I think, that I set a due date 2 days before the date in our 'Event date' custom field, thus triggering an action on the date of the event? A bit cumbersome, but that'd work for sure. I guess it'll have to do, haha.

Thanks again!

It is cumbersome to have 2 stages and a custom field to make this work.  Trello could so easily fix this... However, I'm suggesting that you set the event date to the actual event date, which will in turn set the due date to the same.  Then use the due date automation to triger x number of days before the event date

Aaah, good point! That'll work fine. Thanks!
