Building a Trello Powerup.. I have questions.

Chris Morrissey May 1, 2017

I have a specific need and I have been searching the internet far and wide for soultions.. Nothing. So I may build it myself, but I have questions..

If I develop the power-up...

#1. Does it belong to me?

#2. Do I have to share it?

#3. If I share it, can it be available for a fee?

#4. Is there anything I need to know? (fees, royalties, additional costs, etc)

I appreciate any legitimate feedback you can provide.

I'm not a Trello employee or a lawyer, so this only reflects my understanding, and my own experience developing a Power-Up for Trello:

#1. Does it belong to me?

Yes. You need to sign a Trello Joint Development Agreement  (you do this online). This agreement specifies that each party keeps ownership of the code they have developed (no transfer of ownership).

#2. Do I have to share it?

No. You can deploy it only on your team(s) if you wish.

#3. If I share it, can it be available for a fee?

Yes. Currently, there's no "Power-Up Store", so it's up to you to create/integrate your own billing/payment system.

#4. Is there anything I need to know? (fees, royalties, additional costs, etc)

In my experience, Trello doesn't impose any additional fees or costs, but it requires the Power-Up to adhere to certain guidelines: https://developers.trello.com/power-ups/guidelines
