Automation to paste in description from another card?

Ost September 13, 2023

Trying to set up an automation that would create a new card (when keywords are typed into a checklist) that would also include a description grabbed from a template card.

I know you can include a description in the automation, but it's more flexible for coworkers to be able to edit the template instead of going into the automations.

I'm thinking there is a way to do this thru the automation variables, but I'm still trying to wrap my head around how they all work. 😅

thank you

Hi Bob,

Thanks for reaching out!

Just to confirm, are you looking to set up an automation that creates a card when a certain checklist item is added to a checklist, and that generated card's description is taken from a different card on the board?

Could you set up an automation with the template card description already part of the action?

For example, "when an item is added to checklist [Checklist name], create a new card with title [X] and description [template description text] in list [list]".

I'm looking to set up an automation that would be a bit like this:

when [trigger word] is added to [specific checklist], create a new card, linked in checklist. Add description to new card, copied from [specific other card].

That "specific other card" being one that i have saved elsewhere as a template.

(sorry for delay, computer crash event 😭)

Hi Bob,

No problem!

Would this rule work?

  • when an item containing "trigger word" is added to checklist {checklistname}, convert the item to a linked card, and set the card's description to [card description]

In this example, you'll want to use the {checklistname} variable so the rule triggers for all checklists.

As for the card description, there isn't a way to pull that information from a specific card on the board, but you can simply add it to your rule.

Let me know how that goes,

ah, i already knew i could include a card description. Was hoping to be able to pull it from another card.

oh well. guess i'll just do it that way.

thanks for taking the time to think on it though. :)
