Automatically add labels to new cards based on labels being used to filter the board?

jhewgley February 11, 2023

I would like to be able to do the following:

  1. Filter my board with one or more labels.
  2. Add a new card to the board.
  3. After card creation, see that the new card has the same labels as used for board filtering, added to the card.

I can't find any OOB way to do this and also have not thought of a way to do this with a rule.  Does anyone have suggestions?

Thank you!

Hey @jhewgley

Right now there isn't any way to do what you're looking to do in Trello, the best way for you to do with would be to create a new card but rather than clicking on *Add card* or pressing on *Enter* on your keyboard, if you press Shift + Enter on your keyboard after you've entered the card name this will create the card and take you straight to the card back so you can add any details you need to the card.

Thank you for your response Nathan. This obviously would work but is still too cumbersome for what I'm doing.  I currently have different boards for different "projects" and sync all cards on all those boards to a single consolidated board.  I only add cards to the project boards (when look at things from a single project view).  On a day to day basis though, I use the consolidated board to work on cards across all the projects.  The syncing of cards is a bit of a pain, though it works.  I do they syncing with rules, which works very well except that it is hard to sync everything on the cards.  I tried using PowerUps designed for syncing and found them having too much latency or being too costly (I foot the bill for my own personal organizing tasks).

It would be nice to not have to duplicate and sync cards at all.  The main reason I have all the separate boards is so I can see all the cards for a particular project without any clutter for other projects.  At the same time, I need the consolidated board view for working cards across projects.  My thought is I could go to putting all cards on a single board and use labels on the cards to signify the project each card is related to.  Then I can filter the board by label to get my single project view.  When I remove all label filters, I get my full consolidated view.  For this to work, I have to be meticulous about adding the proper label when I create cards. I need this to be fast and simple so it does not slow me down.  With this single board approach, I envision I would filter my cards to a single project label and add new cards in that filtered state.  That is why I'm trying to determine a way to automatically (or simply) add the same label(s) I am filtering by to all new cards I create.

With this additional context, if you have any other ideas, I am all ears.

Thank you!

Hi @jhewgley - Syncing cards across boards is a popular feature request we've seen in Trello and one that our Product teams are actively investigating. I'll be sure to add your response to the ticket we're using to track this internally.

As for some other options for your workflow. I would suggest using 'keywords' to trigger the addition of those labels in your parent board. For instance when you're creating a card for a specific project you could prefix the project name in the title of your card, then using Automation you can apply the chosen label based on the keyword. When creating the rule you'll need to utilise "pattern matching" to detect certain keywords. You can find more about it here: https://support.atlassian.com/trello/docs/pattern-matching-and-wildcards/

Thank you for this suggestion @Lam .  This may be a viable solution.

Is it possible to attach custom javascript to a board such that I could extract the current board filter values and use them to add labels to a card on creation?
