What is the purpose of the 24-hour notification limitation? If it is 10am and I schedule a meeting for this afternoon and ask for a reminder to be set to remind me at 3pm about the meeting, why would Trello not allow a notification (desktop/email/mobile) to be sent for that event? Doesn't seem to make any sense to me. Am I missing something?

I believe I didn't quite understand your case,
You can set a remind 2 days before the event if you want, this would solve your problem?
I'm not aware of any limitation about the time of the notification, unless you have something set on your desktop/email to not receiving it outside your work hours.
