As a colorblind person, I really dislike these new label colors. The point of having bolder, flashier and more distinctive colors was that I could look at cards at a glance and know which one was about what. Now that this change has been rolled out, I find it much more difficult to read our boards, not to mention the extra dot which takes up screen space for no purpose.
I get that adding more colors is a good feature, however it should not have been deployed without an opt-out setting, especially for a change that negatively impacts accessibility.
"20 new colours" is quite inaccurate, the original 10 colours remain with 3 variations of transparency. I do appreciate that labels have had some attention but I believe more could be done.
There should be options for opaque / semi-transparent. This should be separate from the colour options. E.g. You pick the colour and then pick its transparency. Currently, each colour shows 3 variations of itself with different transparencies, which is unnecessary space used by the UI.
Add an option for white or black text and an option for bolding (this could use the ** markup).
Add more actual colours. Would be nice to see different saturations at least.
An option for an emoji to replace the new dots on labels or just remove the dot, with the colourblind friendly pattern added to the label's background or to the right. Although, the patterns may not be needed if there's an emoji.
Add colour options to cards without having to add a cover. This would make the transparent colours useful as only header cards look good with bright colours.
Covers currently don't have the new updated colour options.
We submitted to support question regarding this change. Please change them back, we like the labels having the brighter more solid colour, or offer an option to Bold the text on the label.
The colors look fine on the iOS app but terrible on the browser. Way too light and hard to make out, even for the darkest option. And our automations are mucked up now. The rules and buttons now don't remove the labels after I changed our labels to the darker ones and updated the rules and buttons. Still not working. Very frustrating.
@Samy Djemaï have you had a chance to turn on colorblind mode with the labels? I'd be curious what you think about that experience! No emojis, but other icons that will help you discern between them
@Mark Leary so, i beleive there was a bug that was discovered yesterday with `removing` labels, and as far as i know that's actively being worked on to get fixed. Can you share an example of a rule that is broken?
@Brittany Joiner I don't use the rules but plug into the API. All my programs fail looking for 'yellow_dark' so assume this is to do with the label colours.
@Mark Leary if it's for removing the yellow_dark label, then i believe this is probably part of the known bug with removing new label colors. This is being worked on. Can you open a support ticket and mention Manatee though, so the team knows to make sure that third party APIs are also supported in this fix and not just Trello automation API?
While I love the addition of more color options, I would have appreciated if the labels I had already created would have stayed the colors they were assigned. I spent weeks setting up my trello boards to flow quickly and efficiently. This one change has undone hours and hours of work.
The pastel colors with the black text blend together and make it more difficult to quickly distinguish between labels without slowing down to read the text, which completely negates the purppose of using labels in the first place.
The dots are now the predominant feature visually and my already cluttered brain is not appreciating this additional visual clutter. My eyes don't know where to land and flit from dot to dot without being able to instantly distinguish between labels. The labels are intended to make your workflows easier, but now they are slowing me down.
I need clean and streamlined to function efficiently and this is not giving me a soothing, organized vibe. I was already considering switching programs next fall. This change may expedite my decision because I can not cope with this visual clutter. If I'm going to have to invest time in re-doing work I've already done, I may as well spend that time in the new program.
@VB im a little confused by some comments like "the dots are distracting" but then a request for the bolder colors to come back - where the Dot is the bolder color. Can you help me understand what you mean and how the bold color as an entire label isn't distracting, but as a section of the label it is?
The dot does not really have a function. Instead, the dot adds another color to the presentation of the same label. This create some visual confusion. I admit that it looks nicer. But it does not help.
@Brittany Joiner The entire label being one bolder color with white text worked better for how my brain processes visual information. Before the change, each card in a list had a distinguished starting place viaually. For example, I could see at a glance that there were 5 cards for 3 differently clients in my current to-do list and each list appeared visually separate at a glance.
The dots on the lighter labels combined with the dark text make the entire page visually blend together for me. All I see at first glance is a bunch of dots on the page with no clear distinction between cards anymore. Visually, it looks like long columns of text with randomly placed dots. Before, I could glance at the page and quickly pick out a specific card from a specific list almost instantly. Now I have to stop and read every single label to find what I need. I get that some people may prefer the lighter colors and darker text, but that isn't what appeals to me.
Even clicking the labels to minimize them and hide the text and dots doesn't solve this since the color tones are just enough different now that I have to stop and think about what those labels mean instead of them being instantly identifiable.
I put a lot of thought and effort into choosing a color scheme that not only functioned well for me, but also made me happy to look at all day long, That visually appealing layout was taken away without notice and the replacement is making a negative impact on my productivity. It's not about the brighter colors, it's about visual clutter and ease of viewing/use. Leaving the existing colors the same and just adding more colors would have been a more user-friendly approach to making a change like this.
I'm looking at my most used board while typing this and the only thing that really stands out now are the red past due dates and notification bells. Everything else just blends together.
@Brittany Joiner The colored dots are redundant information, as they are simply showing a color that the label already is. Since they are a shape, and at the beginning of the label ahead of my own emojis and text, they attract the most attention and are a distraction. That's why we all are saying we hate them.
Very bad change in my opinion! There is no contrast between the shades you provide, and the tiny dot with the true shade is useless for distinguishing the color differences. I have old eyes and look at way too many Trello cards. The labels are critical! Please bring back the old colors ASAP!
