Mark your cards complete - due dates are no longer required in Trello! (Coming Soon)

We are thrilled to announce an exciting update coming soon to the mark complete feature in Trello. Soon due dates will no longer be required!

'Mark it complete' allows you to update the status of a card with a single click, wherever you are in Trello. When you mark a card complete the status is clearly visible on the card front from any view across all of your devices. This feature will work for most cards including Link Cards and Mirror Cards!

If you don't want to mark cards complete on a particular board, board admins can adjust the board setting to hide the check circle on the card front for all board members.

EDIT: We've heard your feedback about the strikethru treatment on card title and have made a change. We are removing the strikethru, keeping the check mark, and adjusting the text color slightly to add a second visual indicator to differentiate complete cards from incomplete cards. You should see the change reflected soon.

Yessss going to be even more satisying to tick those items off. And no need for automation to do it all for me 😂

Nice! I am glad to see that this can be turned on and off per board, as there are definitely situations where it's handy and others where it might just get in the way!

And now a bit of sadness after seeing how the feature is actually implemented behind the scenes ☹️☹️☹️

It is essentially just setting the dueComplete field to "true", meaning it is not recording a "completed" date/time anywhere on the card that we can use for reporting (aka what I've been really waiting for)

Granted; there is an activity action generated but its type is just the generic "updateCard" making them extremely expensive to read via the API for any sort of "Done Cards" reporting 😭

So, here is some feedback to make this feature more useable:

  1. Please Include a new field called "completed" on the cards that records the date/time of completion (just like start and due fields exist)... or if impossible add a new action with the type "cardCompleted" that we can filter actions on for reporting
  2. It would be nice if the "show completed status on card front" could be overridden on the list level (it just feels wrong to see the option in "Inbound" and "backlog" list types where you know they need to first be moved to some "in progress" list before they make sense to mark as done)
  3. I've already answered the first 5 community questions on why their cards had then new option and strike-through text making it hard to read so please add an option to choose if the text is strike-through or not for completed cards (for certain people strikethrough text is easy to read, while for others it is almost impossible)

Great to see the many improvements! Agree with Rasmus' comment on not also striking through the titles for completed cards, this works great on a to-do but not so good when you work together and someone else would like to read the card that got completed. Having the big green check mark is already very clear.

I have to be honest...jury is still out for me on this. I didn't realize that being able to mark a card complete would mean that I can't mark a due date complete anymore. A little thing, but that is such a part of my process.

I'm also not yet seeing any of this on my Android mobile device even though the docs say it should work there as well.

I want to echo the statement above about not loving that the title is strikethrough when complete. The green checkmark is more than sufficient and I don't like the strikethrough

Also, I guess it was my confusion, but I thought we would be able to turn the feature off and on per board, but it appears that we can hide the checkmark on the front of the card, but the functionality is there regardless (ie, can't mark a due date complete)

Much of this is just me getting used to a different version of similar functionality, but just sharing my initial thoughts!

The strikethrough on the title is a rolling complaint within our company already

@Rasmus Wulff Jensen @Reinder Visser @Kelly Gabel @Kyle Burns - Thank you for your candor here. (This is why I love the community!) We've heard your feedback and are planning to address the strikethru ASAP. Please look for an update in the coming day(s).

RE: Android - the feature is rolling out across platforms (web, desktop, and mobile). Mobile roll out has not started yet but will be coming soon as well. Please stay tuned :-)

The strikethrough is horrible! I use Trello to track various resources that I repeat (books, courses, etc.) so striking through the title of the card makes it very hard to read. I agree with previous comments that the green checkmark is sufficient. I preferred the box to check off the due date so please bring that option back. For those who like the strikethrough, then please give us the option to mark a due date complete without striking through the text.

@Alex overall, I actually like the change! Some automation feedback here though, i would expect to see the automation trigger look a little different since "complete" isnt necessarily associated with completing a due date anymore, so i would expect to see this trigger for "when a card  is completed" maybe on card changes instead of in the due date section .CleanShot 2025-02-05 at 10.22.10.png

Also, do we know how this will impact existing automation? ie, if i have automation that marks a due date as complete, or watches for a due date being marked complete, will those still work?

@Alex , like Brittany, I'm warming to the change. I still don't like the strikethrough of the card title, but seeing how this interplays with my existing recurring tasks, it doesn't seem like much has truly changed on the practical front. @Brittany Joiner , my existing automations seem to be running just fine even though the verbiage in the workflow set up still refers to due dates being complete.

I would, also, expect to see changes to the wording in the workflow building because those just creating fresh workflows may be confused with the reference to due date completion when it's now actually card completion.

@Kelly Gabel thats good to hear - one of my workspace has the change, but the one where i have a majority of my automation doesn't have the change yet so i couldn't tell for sure 😂

Im a little shocked about the strikethrough feedback myself - felt like a natural thing to do since that's how checklist items are handled. I guess maybe it works for checklist items but not card titles!

@Brittany Joiner  Ya I was super worried about my existing workflows, but pleasantly surprised!

I like the strikethrough for checklist items, but mostly because I hide completed items 😅

For whatever reason, a strikethrough makes it feel more cluttered-looking to me. I can see how some might like it, though. Perhaps there is a compromise to male it an optional setting?

@Brittany Joiner and @Kelly Gabel - We are working on adjusting the automations too! We will update the language and move the trigger and actions to Card Changes since that does seem to make the most sense with this latest update.. We're also planning on adding new automations for scheduled rules and buttons too. :-)
