Confluence Salesforce.com SSO integration

We are looking at purchasing and implementing Connector for Salesforce.com and Confluence.

After reading the documentation, it is not clear how exactly our existing and new customer portal users (3000+ and growing in saleforcec.com ) will get created in confluence.

Is there an automated synchronization supported by this connector or do we have to write our own synchronization routine for that?

We used these links to understand the integration.

However, we were not able to use this as it requires all the users to have a default group in salesforce and we need to use this across multiple users internal, customers and partners.
