Difference between an incident and alert

I'm able to receive alerts from Jira Cloud. So then a selected the alert and created and incident from it.

The incident shows up in the alert list and is indistinguishable from alerts. There's nothing there that tells me that it's an "incident".

What's the point here?

OK. It's hard to distinguish them but an alert will have a "related incident" kinda link at the top.

It is possible to create incidents automatically based off alerts (though the incident rules things is very difficult to use) but the incident product is so weirdly off that it's better not to use it at all.
