How to Remove a User from a Schedule in Opsgenie

This article will demonstrate how to remove a user from a schedule without messing up the final rotation.

Sometimes, when you remove a user from a schedule, the final rotation gets thrown out of whack. These steps will show you how to avoid this.

First, you'll want to navigate to the schedule in question. If you are deleting the user, you can follow the link in the pop-up. If you're just removing them from the schedule, you'll want to go to the On-call Schedules on the team.

To remove the user from the schedule, you'll want to remove them from the rotation that they are a member of. You can do this by selecting the pencil icon next to the rotation, then 'Edit Rotation'.

Here we have a weekly rotation with 6 users in it:

Right now, User 1 (light green) is on call.

If we remove User 6 (yellow), you can see that the schedule reshuffles and User 5 (purple) is now on call this week.

This happens because the schedule gets built out again with the new rotation members starting with the 'Start on' date on the rotation.

In order to make sure the new schedule continues with just User 6 (yellow) missing, you'll need to look at the most recent rotation period. In our case, this started Monday, December 16 with User 1 on call.

So we'll want to make sure our rotation starts with that user (luckily, it does in this case, but in many cases, you'll need to adjust the order) and we'll set the new 'Start on' date to Dec 16.

As you can see, this new schedule has User 1 (green) on call now and then continues with the same rotation we had laid out before.
