Associate Incident With Existing Slack Channel

Gustav Lasko September 21, 2022

Does anyone else feel that being able to associate an incident with an existing Slack channel would be useful? Right now we only seem to be able to create a new channel, rather than link to one where discussion of the incident may already be ongoing.

It depends on the process you have and what people are involved in what step.

It is common to have a dedicated Incident/Bug channel where you have general discussion, often for reporting or checking if things are incidents to begin with. This is not where you would normally have the incident classification and incident identification discussions, since that is a very specific group of people.

If you have already created a channel for the incident before you register it, then I would first look at the incident process and see if that is the correct flow you want to have, or if you should create the incident first as it is defined now in the tool.

If you have a less formal incident management, or if you have fixed resolver groups, then it would absolutely make sense to have pre-defined channels that you can add. It would make sense in that flow to also be able to attach existing channels.

So the short summary from a long answer is that in some cases it absolutely makes sense to be able to connect to existing Slack channels.

I think that would be a nice feature to add.
