People have been asking for this for almost 10 years, and Atlassian is now adding new features no one wants, so I assume they have fixed this critical bug?
Hey Brian - If you are talking about the Old Jira Issue View - then that functionality has not changed. You can click to edit any of the fields. For myself, I would not consider that even a bug, let along critical.
But with the New Jira Issue View, the field is available all the time whether populated or not.
The New issue view is even worse.
I don't like the new view either, but the Due Date field is visible at all times. :-)
