jira upgrade says "he directory you have selected is not a valid existing JIRA installation directory" although the directory is right
im uprading from 4.1 to 4.4

The fully automatic upgrade is only from V4.3. You have to do a manual upgrade which is really new install and manually update any modified config files.
From then on you should be able to auto upgrades...
