Why am I unable to drop an issue type from an Issue Type Screen?

Jennifer DiLapi November 1, 2024

I am in the Modify Issue Type Scheme of my project.
The on-screen instructions state:

Tab key: Use tab to navigate, arrow keys to move, and the space bar to select and drop the issue type.

I tabbed down to the list of issue types. When the one I want to drop from this scheme is selected, I am pressing the space bar. Nothing is happening. I get no error message, no screen refresh, nothing. I also tried the Delete key for safe measure. Same result.

I have already confirmed that there are 0 issues in any of my projects assigned to this issue type.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Also, this page I'm typing in to submit this question tells me to include relevant screenshots but there is no clear way of doing that. :/ I have been using and administering Jira for over 5 years.

Hi @Jennifer DiLapi ,

Keyboard control instructions might be a bit unclear here. I just tested it and can confirm the following:

  • Tab key indeed goes through the page and can select specific issue type - whether in the "Issue Types for Current Scheme" or in "Available Issue Types" column. The selected issue type will have black border around the box (see the attached image below).
  • Once the issue type is selected you can use up and down arrow keys to move it up or down in the same column
  • If you wish to move from one column to another, you would need to hold space key and use left or right arrow key
My bad here (disregard text above) - once you select the issue type with the tab, hit space key once, this will 'select' the issue (although it's not visible in any way). Once you've selected it, you can use arrow keys - up and down, and left and right to move it across columns

Personally, I would recommend using the mouse drag-and-drop option compared to keyboard solutions.

As for adding screenshots to the questions or replies, you'll have to use Insert Photos option in the input editor as standard copy and paste will not work.2024-11-01_17-48-20.png

Thanks so much for your reply. So my problem, I think, is that I was trying to remove issue types from the Default Scheme.
So I don't have both boxes.
I ended up just deleting the unnecessary issue types, but another option would've been to create a scheme just for that one project and remove it from that using your method.

Thanks again.

Hello @Jennifer DiLapi

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

I actually never noticed that instructional message nor ever tried to use just the keyboard in that way. I have the same experience as use - no reaction to the space bar when an issue type is highlighted. I'm using Chrome, and an Incognito window.

With regard to adding images when you are creating a Question in the community, use the Insert Photos toolbar button.

Thanks so much Trudy! I feel like a dork for not seeing that Insert Photos button.
I have a working theory of why it wasn't working.
The specific project I was trying to remove those issues types from is using the Default Issue Type Scheme.
Perhaps, since that default is used for any unassigned projects, it wants to keep all available issue types in there.
So what I ended up doing was going to Project Settings/Issues/Issue Types and deleting those that I no longer needed (in any project).

But a message telling me I couldn't delete issue types from the default scheme (if that's what it was) would've helped :)
Thanks again for such a quick reply!
