Selecting Issue Type - Initiative as the top hierarchy in a Teams Managed Project

Reagan Chan March 28, 2022

Hi All,

Can I ask is it possible to move the issue type - Initiative as the top level hierarchy (above epics) within a Teams Managed Project?

https://confluence.atlassian.com/advancedroadmapsserver0329/configuring-initiatives-and-other-hierarchy-levels-1021218664.html#:~:text=In%20your%20plan%2C%20click%20Settings,Click%20Save%20changes.

Kind regards,

Hi @Reagan Chan 👋🏼

As Trudy said, it's not possible to achieve your intended issue hierarchy in a Team Managed project.

If you're still weighing the solutions, do check out this app called Hierarchy for Jira, which is developed by my team at Adaptavist.

With this app, you can flexibly create a custom issue hierarchy and view them in a tree structure, along with roll-up reports:

Since the hierarchy is established through the Parent-Child relationship, you can link issues from multiple projects to a single Epic or Initiative as well. The use case is extremely flexible with this app.

I hope you're open to trying it out. I'd love to learn more about your experience with Jira overall and if there's anything we could build to help you solve your problems :)

Cheers,

Linh from Adaptavist

Hi @Reagan Chan

just to add to Trudy's answer, there are a number of apps on the Atlassian Marketplace that support issue hierarchies beyond the built-in Epic/Base/Subtask hierarchy, typically utilising issue links. The downside, as compared to Advanced Roadmaps, is that such hierarchies are then only visible in the respective app, and not natively integrated into Jira.

When searching the Marketplace, I would recommend to check the reviews of the various apps, and consider certifications like Cloud Fortified. E.g., a query like this would be a good starting point: https://marketplace.atlassian.com/search?hosting=cloud&product=jira&query=hierarchy.

Disclaimer: I work on JXL for Jira, one of the apps that supports custom issue hierarchies as described above, also in team-managed projects. It also integrates with Advanced Roadmaps, so a later transition to AR would be very easy.

Hope this helps,

Hannes

Hello @Reagan Chan

Welcome to the community.

The short answer is no.

Because you mentioned Team Managed projects I am going to assume you are using Jira Cloud. The document you referenced is for Jira Server/Data Center.

As per the FAQs section of this page:

https://atlassian.com/software/jira/features/roadmaps

...Advanced Roadmaps is not yet supported for Team Managed projects, and you would need Advanced Roadmaps to add a level to the issue hierarchy.

Hi @Reagan Chan

Welcome to the community!!

You can use issue links to create your own hierarchy at any level.

If you would be interested in a paid app, to visualize the hierarchy based on the issue links, we have created an add-on to track the progress at each level,

Agile Tools - Epic Tree, Links Tree and Time in Status

Key features of Links Hierarchy:

  • Hierarchy upto 10 levels deep
  • Progress % on "remaining estimate" or "original estimates"
  • Edit Issue summary, time estimates, story points and assignee on the tree with real time updates in the progress
  • Rolled up percentage completion at all levels
  • Ability to add/remove the columns on the report

Disclaimer: I work for RVS, the vendor for this app, and I am one of the developers in the team
