Remove Parent Field from Create Issue Screen

I can't seem to remove the required Parent field from the 'Create Issue' screen. I have removed it from all obvious screen scheme associated with the project. How can I make it not required?

Hi @Kelly Ballwanz ,

Do you, by any chance use some third-party add-ons (e.g. ScriptRunner)? I know you can set a behavior (which is not visible on field configuration or workflow) to have a specific field required on create screen(s).

Regarding Parent field, I am not aware of any other native way other than workflow validators to set this field required.
Btw, Parent Link and Parent are two different fields, where Parent Link is actually deprecated on the cloud and replaced with Parent field.

On additional note/question - which issue type level are you trying to create and for which system requires a parent? Are we talking about standard issue types or some lower or upper-level ones (as you are on Premium and have the ability to customize issue type hierarchy)?

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

Is the problem that the field is still appearing on the screen, or that you are prevented from saving the issue because the field is required and you get an error message?

What type of project are you using? Get that information from the Type column on the View All Projects page under the Projects menu.

If you have successfully removed the field from the screen and it is not appearing, but you get an error message about it being required, that would indicate either the Workflow is requiring the field to be filled in or the Field Configuration has set the field as Required.

Hi.

It is a company managed, software project. And I am getting the error message that it is a required field.

I have checked the field configuration (see below). It is not on any screens and yet it is still stopping tickets from being created.

As you have found the Parent field does not show up in the Field Configuration, so it could not have been set to Required there.

That suggests that there is something in the Create transition of the Workflow for the specified issue type in the specified project that requiring the Parent field to be set.

Can you show us the Validators information for the Create transition for the from the workflow for the issue type you are trying to create? Example:

I've been a jira admin for over 6 years now, and I have never seen anything like this.

I have not seen a Create transition that did not include the permissions check shown in my example image.

Does your Create Issue screen show a Status selection field? And, if so, what value is that set to when this error occurs?

I'm wondering if the creation process is trying to execute another transition where the Parent field is required.
