Sounds a bit too cryptic to make any guess, also can't see anything on the internet that would seem related.

I believe the error is though encountered when Jira is trying to pass the mail to the mail server (or whatever mail transfer agent stands between Jira and the actual smtp server). So I would probably start there by figuring out what service Jira is trying to pass the email to, because that should be the point where it gets the error. Perhaps there might be more in the logs of that thing, either the MTA or the mail server itself, so hopefully that might help connect some dots. But all in all from that error message I'm not finding anything about it.

For instance, we use Postfix to relay mails from Jira to the SMTP - so we would check logs from postfix to see what happened between postfix and SMTP (since Jira doesn't quite know about that step). So if you use something similar, that's what I mean by MTA, if you don't, the mail server then. I'm not exactly Columbo with smtp in general but that's where I'd look for more hints.

yeah I didn't find anything either on the internet.
We were reported there was this message flooding in the logs but no problems were actually met.

if I find something I'll update with a solution or a root cause.

Thanks for the troubleshooting steps !
