Jira Cloud Enterprise - Changing tasks hierarchy to be under stories

Yoav Ben Arie (Zynga) October 30, 2024

Hello,
I am using Jira Cloud Enterprise, in that version, there is the option to change the issues hierarchy.

Before testing the change and maybe breaking my issues relations. with that feature is there an ability to change the hierarchy so that stories will be the parents of tasks?

Thanks,

Yoav

Hello @Yoav Ben Arie (Zynga)

It is not possible to make changes to the issue type hierarchy below the Epic level. The feature supports only extending the hierarchy above the Epic level. To make a Story (standard issue type) a parent to a Task (another standard issue type), you would have to raise the Story to be at the same level in the hierarchy as Epic. If you wanted Epics to continue to be parents to Story, then you would have to raise the Epic to a new level above Story.

Otherwise, for level 0 issues the only child issues they can have are Sub-tasks (level -1 issues).

An alternate solution is to use generic issue linking to artificially establish a relationship between a Story and a Task, but Jira will not recognize that as a parent/child relationship.
