Is there a way to show average time in status other than using the average time in status gadget?

Angel Osberg May 19, 2021

Our IT Service Center works in multiple JSM projects that have different statuses, but the statuses are very similar to each other. For example, we have one project that uses the status "In Progress", where another project that they work out of has a status of "Work in Progress." Is there a way to lump these similar statuses together on a dashboard and reflect the average time in status as just one status of "In Progress?" Thank you!

Hi @Angel Osberg

You cannot do that with out-of-the-box Jira, unless you convinced the teams to align their status values for consistency...which may not work for your teams.

I can think of several possible work-arounds, each with varying costs/pros/cons:

  1. Investigate marketplace add-ons which allow summarizing/normalizing status values across projects for reporting
  2. Using a webhook to push out issue logs, gather information in a log reporting tool to roll up results
  3. Using automation for Jira for each project, capture relevant measures using common names (e.g. "QA In Progress") into custom fields and use those for reporting
  4. Using automation for Jira, simplify to only report on Status Category time, so you would only have the summation of all "in progress" status values

For whatever you want to try, I recommend you first pause to discuss what you want to measure, why you want it, and how you would act if you had the information right now.  That will help your team in deciding solutions and cost/benefit of measurement.

Best regards,

Bill

Hi @Angel Osberg 👋

For anyone looking for an answer to this question

You can also try Time in Status for Jira Cloud app from Marketplace (create by my team).

Using it you can generate Average time in status report and add it Jira dashboard as a gadget. Data could be present in table and chart views.

Add-on has a 30-day free trial version and free up to 10 users.
Please, let me know if you have any questions

Hope it helps 😌

Hello @Angel Osberg

For a ready-built solution that offers great flexibility and details, our team at OBSS built Time in Status app for this exact need. It is available for Jira Server, Cloud, and Data Center.

Time in Status allows you to see how much time each issue spent on each status or assigned to each assignee. You can also combine statuses into consolidated columns to see metrics like Ticket Age, Resolution Time, Cycle Time, or Lead Time

For your case, you can put "In Progress", "Work in progress", and other similar columns into a Consolidated Column to see them as a single value.

You can calculate averages and sums of those durations grouped by the issue fields you select. (For example, see the total InProgress time per Epic or average Resolution Time per issue type).

Below are screenshots that show a custom Lead Time field that shows the total of ToDo and InProgress statuses. The same can be done for any status combination.

Time in Status can display its report in its own reporting page, dashboard gadgets, and issue view screen tabs.

The app calculates its reports using already existing Jira issue histories so when you install the app, you don't need to add anything to your issue workflows and you can get reports on your past issues as well.

Using Time in Status you can:

  • See how much time each issue spent on each status, assignee, user group and also see dates of status transitions.
  • Calculate averages and sums of those durations grouped by issue fields you select. (For example, see average InProgress time per project and per issue type.)
  • Export your data as XLS, XLSX, or CSV.
  • Access data via REST API. (for integrations)
  • Visualize data with various chart types.
  • See Time in Status reports on Jira Dashboard gadgets (released for cloud, server&DC gadget coming soon)

Hi @Angel Osberg ,

As an alternative, you can try Status Time app developed by our team. It provides reports on how much time passed in each status as well as status entry dates and status transition count.

Once you enter your working calendar into the app, it takes your working schedule into account too. That is, "In Progress" time of an issue opened on Friday at 5 PM and closed on Monday at 9 AM, will be a few hours rather than 3 days. It has various other reports like assignee time, status entry dates, average/sum reports(eg. average in progress time per project). And all these are available as gadgets on the dashboard too.

Here is the online demo link, you can see it in action and try.

If you are looking for a free solution, you can try the limited version Status Time Free. Hope it helps.
