Is there a way to create JIRA issues in a tabular fashion?

Is there a way to create JIRA issues via a tabular interface? I have users who want to create JIRA issues from importing an XLS spreadsheet, where each row represents a single issue, but only because it seems much easier for them to enter line by line in an XLS rather than go through multiple screens in JIRA.

If there were an easier/faster way to create new issues in JIRA then this whole import cycle (with all the inherent hassle) could be avoided.

Currently we are using JIRA 3.13 (the plan is of course to upgrade, but with many customisations, this is a non-trivial task).

Thanks!

I think the addition of Greenhopper is going to be the closest we can get. It doesn't add Excel-style editing, but it does enable in-line editing, which would likely be as good.

JIRA Command Line Interface allows you to import CSV (Excel) into projects. See release notes . This is useful for bulk loading of a number of issues documented in a speadsheet for some other process reason. In our case it is testcase definitions where it is convenient to get the all ready at once, then when work is complete load them into JIRA.

Hello, thanks for your answer. As I tried to explain, I want to avoid this process of importing from XLS, and wondered if there was a similar style table interace directly within JIRA (rather like in-line editing in Greenhopper). I know I can import CSV, but I think it's a horrible fudge which I want to avoid.

There isn't an nice solution that I am aware of. We use Confluence to make it easier for the user to load the information, but, I agree it is not ideal. If you have Confluence, it would be possible to put something together with some plugins/user macros. The trouble is it is hard to replicate all the create issue capability unless you simplify to only a few specific fields etc...
