Importing Workflows from XML

We do frequent upgrades on our server. We need to import changes Workflows for different environments. Is there a way to import a Workflow XML and replace an existing one with the same name? The import requires a unique name but that means we would have to change each project for the workflow. Can we just replace the workflow so that all the projects get the updated workflow?

I looked at https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/JIRA/Configuring+Workflow#ConfiguringWorkflow-ImportinganXMLworkflowintoJIRA. I did not see option to replace existing workflow

No you can't. After importing, you will need to change the workflow & it's scheme and then migrate the issues from the old workflow to the new workflow.
