I cannot add columns

I need to add a column to the In Progress status.

Every time I add a column which I want to make In Progress JIRA adds a New Column with  This column will not show on the board without a status however the status button is greyed out 

How can I add a column so that it becomes an 'in Progress status.

To add a column, click the "add column" button to the right.

Columns are not added to a status.  Columns are created and then status are put in them.  If you want several columns to show your various in-progress status, you need to have those status in your workflow, and then map them into the columns.
