Groups lost after user directory switch from local directory to LDAP

We currently use JIRA local directory to authenticate our users however, we would like to switch to LDAP authentication on our next upgrade release. We have performed a test in our development environment to simulation the switching and found that our current users in JIRA were all gone from the jira-users group as well as other groups they below to. Is there any way to preserve the local groups when we switch the user authentication from local directory to LDAP? We have used "Read Only, with Local Groups" as the option for LDAP permissions. Please advise.
