I am a Jira Admin and I would like to edit a user to not be able to edit their own comments.  I can't figure out how to do that.

I see in permission helper that I can see what permissions they have but don't see how to revoke a certain permission.

Hello @Deann Evans

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

Adding to the good information provided by @Abyyba and @Victor Law , I want to provide two more pieces of information.

1. To modify permissions and roles in a Team Managed project you need to yourself have the Administer Project permission for the project. To modify Permissions Schemes used by Company Managed projects you need to be a Jira Administrator (have the Global permission for Administer Jira).

2. You did not tell us what type of subscription plan you are using - Free, Standard, Premium, or Enterprise. If you are on the Free plan then Permissions cannot be customized and you would not be able to prevent a user from modifying their own Comments.

Subject: How to Restrict Comment Editing in Jira (Team-Managed vs. Company-Managed)

Hi Deann,

Thanks for reaching out to the community! It's a great place to learn and share knowledge.

I noticed the title of your question might be a bit off from what you're actually asking. It's easy to get a little lost in the terminology when you're first starting with Jira.

To get the most accurate help, let's clarify your question. It sounds like you're asking: How can I prevent specific users from editing their own comments in a Jira project?

If so, I suggest modifying the question to be more precise, find better help, and help others solve this problem.

The answer depends on whether your project is team-managed or company-managed. Here's a breakdown:

Team-Managed Projects:

Focus on "roles": You can see the default roles and their permissions, or create a custom role to assign to specific users.

Company-Managed Projects:

You'll need to work with permission schemes and project roles:

Modify the permission scheme: Change the ability to edit comments for users in that project. You can limit it by role, group, or other criteria.

I'd recommend taking a look at those links to find the solution that best fits your needs.

Feel free to ask whenever you need if you have any further questions or need more specific guidance tailored to your Jira setup!

We are here to help!

Regards,
Sergio G.

Hi @Deann Evans

Jira standard projects are mainly managed via the project permission scheme, which associates a project role (recommended), group, or user with a specific permission.

I strongly recommend that you check the project permission scheme associated with the project and identify which project role/group is associated with the Edit Own Permission.

Please refer to the Atlassian documentation on the permission scheme for more information:

Thank you.
