I was trying to delete a ticket on Jira and accidentally deleted the whole column. Is there a way to recover the column? If not, when I tried to create a new column with the same name as before, I get a message saying, "Unable to rename status- This status name has been used before. To use it again, open the workflow editor and create a status with the same name." I followed the instructions to do that and it says "Already exists, try a different name"

Hi Brianne!

Good day to you! I'm Felipe from ServiceRocket support team

Regarding your question, unfortunately, Jira doesn’t have an "undo" option for this, but you can recover it by following these steps:

Check if the status still exists in the workflow

  1. Go to Jira Settings > Issues > Workflows.
  2. Find the workflow used in your project and click Edit.
  3. If the status is still there, you just need to re-add it to your board (see step 3).
  4. If it’s missing, you’ll need to recreate it.

Recreate the missing status

  1. Go to Jira Settings > Issues > Statuses and try adding it again.
  2. If you get an error saying the status already exists, try creating it with a slightly different name (e.g., "In Progress - New").
  3. Once created, add this status to your workflow.

Add the status back to your board

  1. Open your Jira board and go to Board Settings > Columns.
  2. Make sure the status is mapped to a column.
  3. If the status isn’t listed, drag and drop it into the correct column.

Rename the status (if needed)

  1. If you have to use a different name, you can rename it later in Jira Settings > Issues > Statuses once Jira allows it.
  • If you still get an error saying the status name is already in use, try waiting a few minutes and refreshing Jira—it sometimes takes time to update.
  • If the issue persists, check with your Jira admin to see if the old status is still in the system but hidden.

Best,
Felipe
