Create a custom field that automaticlly has the value of the issue's status

We are using a connector to link up JIRA to SFDC. In the connector we have a need to have one set of values mapped form the JIRA isse status to a field in SFDC. We also need to have the same issue status map to a field in SFDC directly. Unfortunatly the connector does not allow this. One way I can think around this is to create a second status field that is just contains the value of the issues status.

Is this possible?

Create a Select Custom field with the same options as that of status field. The set the field's value in the workflow post function that sets the new field value to that of Status field.

You can even create a readonly text field and set the Status name in the post function.
