Can JIRA store external identifiers in it? Can it be manipulated to hold other data?

Hi, I am trying to integrate JIRA with another app. I need JIRA to basically hold identifiers from the other app so that the two can synch with one another. Is there any way to manipulate JIRA to have another column in its SQL code for other app identifiers? Thanks!
