Can I duplicate a project?

J Chan October 20, 2011

Hi - can I duplicate a project? Basically, we'd like to create a template project - so that when we go to create a new project we don't have to recreate the wheel.

thanks

Thanks for the heads up Frederick. Quick follow up question;

Does Gaia integrae with the (relativity) new Agile Scum & Kanban modules?

Hi Russell Earnest,

Gaia for JIRA helps you manage your project creation by creating projects based on templates containing issues and other configurable options.

These issues can be of any type and it will even reproduce the relations between your issues (Sub-tasks and technical tasks will be associated with their parent).

Gaia for JIRA does no integrate with Agile. By this I mean that it will not create Agile boards (Scrum or Kanban), but since the project will be pre configured for you (with epics and stories, schemes, Confluence space, etc.), creating the boards should be trivial for you after the project creation process.

Hi Russel,

Gaia for JIRA now supports JIRA Agile.

For example, it can automatically create a Scrum or a Kanban board when creating a new project.

Check it out here: http://bit.ly/RwwjGQ

Thanks,

JF

Hi J C,

Gaia for JIRA could be what you are looking for.

With Gaia for JIRA, you can create a template with a set issues and schemes you want your project to be associated with after it's creation.

I see this question has languished for 2 years. Any news?

My client wants to convert from Base Camp so as to use the new Jira Agile tools but BC has a neat way to create a template of tasks and then create a project from the template.

Is there anything like this in Jira now?

Bob Swifts JIRA CLI plugin might also be an option for you. it let's you capture all issues from a source project and import in a target project. These steps could all be put together in a single batch file which actually would requre just source and target project name. But of course there is nothing ready yet. In my enterprise i have extend the copy plugin to also export and import issues using the JiraDataImporter interface but i am not allowed to publish this.

I have read about Jamie's plugin and if understood it correctly, though, it's focused primarily on project configuration. If you want to reuse project data, you would have to export the pristine project (before the project is run for the first time), and re-import it into the new project. For example, maybe you have a lot of really simple projects with the same 30 stories you perform again and again (like a campaign or brochure website creation). You can create the original set of issues in a spreadsheet, and import them into the new project.

I had a similar question from one of our users at a lower level recently: How can I build a re-usable story template?

My response: "Building a version called "Templates" and filling it with stories for cloning as your project team did appears to be the recommended approach at this time. I did not find any existing capabilities or plug-ins in the catalog that would otherwise suffice. We might also create spreadsheets with stories and sub-tasks pre-defined for import depending upon the type of project to be loaded."
