We are currently looking to move all of our projects to Greenhopper. At the moment the projects are using various methods of tracking but they are all based on an excel workbook.

Is there any easy way of uploading multiple stories / issues from an excel workbook into a project on Jira?

JIRA Command Line Interface support this by using Excel to export the data as CSV - see How to import data from external systems or databases and release notes. There is also Atlassian's How to import from CSV‎.
