Board and Project - should I connect each of the board to any of the Projects?

Is it possible to create a board with no assigns to any of the projects at all?

I think it is not possible, because this is the concept of the boards to display the cards of the Projects... but it could be the wrong assumption. 

Kindly share your thoughts.

You are correct, a board needs to be linked to a project.

To visualize information not linked to a board, create a dashboard.

A dashboard, unless, has no option to use columns like a board.

Short answer: yes.

Boards have a location, either in a project or a user profile.  A board may be created (or moved to) your own user profile.  There are several challenges / differences when a board is stored in a profile rather than a project.
