I swear it worked for a while, but now it doesn't - did I turn off a setting somewhere?

I have epics (you can see that the selected task has an epic that's a parent), but there aren't any in the backlog view or the board view.

Hi @Chris Relf

I believe this is related to an on-going problem we have seen in team managed projects in regards to certain fields, such as status, not displaying as expected in Jira.  I have created a support case on your behalf over in https://getsupport.atlassian.com/servicedesk/customer/portal/23/JST-1104037 so that our team can investigate this further.

Hi @Chris Relf
Please check the board filter. The board will display issues based on the filter configured.

There are no filters applied - and that's not the problem: I used to see the name of the Epic on each card, but now I don't.  And in the Backlog view, there are no Epics listed in the Epic Panel.

Hello @Chris Relf

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

What type of project are you using? Get that information from the View All Projects page under the Projects menu.

Are the parent Epic and child issues in the same project?

Hi Trudy - thanks, good to be here!  Long-time jira user, first time poster :)

  • The project type is Team-managed software
  • Yes, the Epics and Tasks are all in the same project

What are the current Status values assigned to the Epics? Are they part of the "Done" Status Category (those that appear as green lozenges)?

The Epics panel will display only "not done" Epics, base on the Epic's current Status Category, which is derived from its current Status. Issues in a status color-coded green are in a Status that is within the "Done" Status Category and would not be displayed.

Excellent question!  The Epics are either TO DO or IN PROGRESS.

If you use the Create epic option in the Epic panel in the Backlog and complete the process of creating a new Epic, does not display in the panel and stay there?

Do you have any statuses in the Unmapped Statuses area in your Board's Column configuration?

Do non-Epic issues in the To Do and In Progress statuses appear in the Backlog and Board views?

So check this out - I start in the Backlog view with it showing no Epics:

TestEpic_A.png

I create a Test Epic:

I switch to the Board view, and then back to the Backlog view and BAM, no Epics!

...but the Epic I just created actually still exists:

I am at a loss to explain this.

I have flagged you post to have the Atlassian team investigate. You should here something from them within 2 business days.

In that Epic you just created, can you click the Refresh button within the Automation panel on the right, and see if that reveals that any Automation rules have been run against the Epic? I'm not immediately thinking of anything that a rule could do that could cause this to happen, that doesn't also fall within the things we've already checked. But if a rule has run we should look at the details of that rule to see what it did.

If I create a new test Epic and a couple of Tasks (one in the test Epic, one not), both look fine:

Before.png

If I switch the the Board view, then back to the Backlog view, the Epic goes away in the Epic panel, but it's retained on the task:

Then, if I move the task into the Board, it retains the Epic (this is weird, but okay, I can deal with it...):

But then when I switch to the Board view, no Epic on it's card:

Thanks Trudy - I do have a rule that clones certain tasks when they transition to DONE, but that rule hasn't run in a while...
