An epic cannot have another epic linked to it.

I have a workflow with 6 statuses. I can create an epic and transition it to the 3rd status. when I try the next transition I get the message 'An epic cannot have another epic linked to it'. 

if I add the 'Epic Link' field to the form and edit the Epic, the 'Epic Link' field is empty.

I don't know how to solve the problem

Jira server version: Jira v9.4.15

My bad, the error message is visible because the 'epic link' field is visible. It's just a warning the value cannot be changed. I can approve the transition, I only could not see the button because the form was to large for my screen.
