How to manage multilevel project in JIRA

Hello everyone,

We are working on multilevel with many components project. The scope is in general:

Device1:

  1. Hardware
    1. Mechanics
      1. Profile
      2. Light diffuser
      3. Housing
    2. Electronics
      1. Power electronics
        1. Connectors
          1. External
          2. Internal
        2. Power supply
        3. Microcontroller
        4. Communication line
      2. Light
        1. LED module
  2. Software
    1. Microcontroller
      1. Bootloader
      2. Operating system
    2. Light
      1. Configuration
  3. Testing
    1. Code tests
    2. Functional tests
    3. Electronic tests
  4. Documentation
    1. For product full documentation
    2. For production
  5. Packing material
  6. Manual
    1. Installation guide
    2. Troubleshooting
    3. Certificate
    4. Technical manual
  7. Stickers

Device2

  1. Hardware
    1. ...
  2. Software
    1. ...
  3. ...

And there are other devices with similar structure. Every devices are included in the same project.

What do we need to have?

We need to put this structure in Jira with various methodologies. Software part (like Operating system) is good with SCRUM but others parts will be good with simpler methodologies. We would like to have one project devided to smaller parts, just like in the structure.

What would you suggest?

Hi Pawel,

Thanks for posting!

This multilevel hierarchy might be difficult to achieve in Jira. You can use Components to break down your projects into smaller parts and Issue Links to represent the relationships between these issues. However, it would be very challenging to visualize the hierarchy the way you have it here.

Have you considered using apps?

I am part of the ALM Works team and our app Structure for Jira does provide an easy way to build hierarchies of issues that can be adjusted to your specific process. You can have as many levels as you want, which is useful when you need to break down larger tasks, as you described.

If you would like more details, we can be reached at support@almworks.com or you can email me directly at vlad@almworks.com.

Thank you. I will try Structure app as you suggest.
