What is shown?
A screenshot of an issue in Jira Software Cloud, a request form’s configuration in Jira Service Management Cloud, and a global space overview page in Confluence Cloud.
What can we learn?
Since Jira and Confluence are both Atlassian products, the applications have the same look and feel with similar default colors, fonts, and layouts.
Navigation
No matter where you are in the applications, you’ll always see the same top navigation bar at the top of the page. The grid icon on the left is the application navigator. Click it to switch between cloud sites, Atlassian applications, or other linked tools. The next item is the product name and logo image. If you ever get lost, click the logo to return your home page. In Jira, the home page location is configurable for each user. Next, on the left are the application’s main navigation links. Use these to access all different application resources like projects in Jira and spaces in Confluence. Towards the center of the page is a create button to create new Jira issues or new Confluence content. Finally, use the right side of the navigation to search, read notifications, get help, access application settings, and manage personal profile settings.
Tip: Use the icon in your browser’s address bar to determine which application you’re in. The first icon in the example is for Jira. The second is for Confluence. And the third is the Atlassian logo. You’ll see the logo when visiting admin.atlassian.com for user and product management functions in Cloud. Application icons are also customizable.
Shortcuts
Both applications have keyboard shortcuts. Type the “question mark” key to see the shortcut list. Type the “c” key to create new content in Confluence and new issues in Jira. Or, type the back-slash key to search.
Terminology
Next, some terminology is the same between applications. For example, permissions impacting application access and abilities are called “Global permissions” in all applications.
Formatting
All applications support wiki markup to insert icons and emojis. For example, type: open parenthesis, the back-slash key, and close parenthesis to insert a green checkmark icon. I use these icons a lot to create visual indicators in description fields, pages, and comments.
Just wait until you start trying to use this wiki markup in other applications. I frequently find myself typing these codes in a word processor for example, which of course doesn’t work.
User Management
Also, in Cloud, users, groups, and product subscriptions are all managed in a central area at admin.atlassian.com.
