Introducing the summary view in Jira software projects

Hi Atlassian Community waving hand

I’m pleased to announce that we have started rolling out the summary view to software projects!

If you work in Jira business projects, you may already be a fan of the summary view. slightly smiling face  We know that gaining a clear snapshot overview of your project is important for all teams to understand their project progress at a glance, so we’ve now enabled the summary view across both software and business projects.

The summary view has been designed to give you a glimpse into how a project is tracking, as well as business performance and workload distribution across team members. Each chart provides an easy-to-digest overview, with the ability to click through to view the breakdown of individual work items.

summaryviewinsoftwareprojects-annotated.png

Key sections on the summary view include:

  1. Overview cards: View issues that have been completed, updated, and created in the past seven days, as well as the number of items due in the next seven days.

  2. Status overview: View your project’s overall progress on issues, based on the statuses in your workflow.

  3. Recent activity: Stay up to date with what's happening across your software project.

  4. Priority breakdown: View how work is prioritized within your software project, to make sure that your team is focusing on the most important work first.

  5. Types of work: View a breakdown of your project’s issues by their type.

  6. Team workload: View your team's current workload at a glance.

  7. Epic progress: View a breakdown of the issue statuses across your epics, so you can quickly see how each epic is progressing

The summary view will be rolled out to all Jira instances over the coming weeks! We would love to hear your feedback, including any suggestions to improve the value this page offers for you and your team.

Hi @Lisa

This is a really cool feature for Jira Software projects.

BTW, I have one point to discuss here:

In business projects, there is only one board. Summary view is really helpful.

But in software projects, there may be multiple boards in a single project. For a large product development team working at a single product, they may have 5~6 boards for each Agile team working on a dedicated product module or component. The Summary view (e.g. Team Workload) may be more helpful to show at each board level. What do you think?

Thanks,
YY Bro

Thanks @Lisa

Looking forward to this ... from the screenshot on this article, it looks like it is in the new navigation view. Is this going to roll out as the new navigation is rolled out in our instance only?

If not, can you perhaps post what it would look like in the current navigation?

Also, is it possible to disable summary view at all? I sure hope our teams adopt this summary view nicely once it is rolled out.

Thank you

Hi @YY Brother thank you for the feedback.

You make an excellent point regarding the nuances with software projects including multiple boards in a single project. This is an area we're currently exploring and assessing interest amongst users (so your feedback is helpful here!). Some of things we're thinking about as part of future customisations, is whether we enable filtering on the summary view to filter to a board-view, or instead show it at each board level. If you have any further thoughts on this feel free to comment or drop me an email at lsutherland@atlassian.com!

Thanks,
Lisa

Can you see a 12 month summary and not just the last week. I have tried to change the date range but can't get a status overview or team workload for the year.

I'm excited about this feature! Is it possible to have a "Summary" view for all projects? For instance, we have some individuals working across multiple teams. We're using Kanban, and we've set up a top-level Kanban board that displays all the projects assigned to a specific team in a single view. However, the summary view doesn't show any data because it’s not tied to a specific project.

Hi @Amaechi Oduah at this stage you can not filter the time period on the view. We're actively working on exploring this for our roadmap, if you have any further thoughts on this feel free to comment or drop me an email at lsutherland@atlassian.com!

Hi @Ireen Latimer from your requirements it sounds like the summary view on Plans might be better suited to you as it provides a cross-project overview of insights. If that isn't suitable, feel free to share further feedback at lsutherland@atlassian.com or set up some time in my calendar at https://calendly.com/lisafeedback/30min.

This just got rolled out to us. Really nice!

Can this possible be rolled out for a project board perhaps? Or do we need to create a custom dashboard for that? Reason I ask is it gives nice summary for the project (and it's issues) but would like to see the exact same BUT for a board (and it's filter)

Oh looks slightly similar to what @YY Brother posted too

Thank you again

@Lisa Similar to other customer requests, what is the plan for allowing some configuration options for these cards?  This appears to be a nice quick shortcut of creating a Dashboard but the Dashboards allow for configurations from settings, filters, etc.

Thank you

I'd like to be able to modify the date period of this view but it seems to be fixed to 7 days. Any plans to enable this?

@Lisa

Hope you are well

I'd would like to know if there are intending to make it (summary view) customisable in the future?

Thanks in advance

The summary page looks very good.  It would be helpful to be able to add some of those screens (e.g. epics progress) in a project dashboard.  Also, being able to maximize the window of the summary board of interest, like for instance being able to see the progress of all epics in one screen, and export it to power point.

Thanks,

Katty

Hi @Yatish Madhav At this stage you would need to create a custom dashboard for a project board in CMP. At the moment, we're exploring how we might achieve this in the upcoming quarters through filtering. Thank you for the feedback on this!

I find this view to be very useful, provided we have any option to view it at an Agile Team level also.  Else this would better positioned in Jira Align.  Thanks!

Hi @Lisa , Re: adding time-filtering over the upcoming quarters

Ideally I'd like to see filtering options as follows:

  • Custom: From date1 to date2
  • Last 7 days
  • Last 2 weeks
  • Last month
  • Last quarter
  • Last year

Hi @ckopanon this has rolled out to all customers. However if your instance is enrolled in release tracks, you may have a different rollout time. Feel free to email me your instance name at lsutherland@atlassian.com and I can investigate this for you.
