We wanted to write a fun post for Christmas. Maybe something about our 12 favorite new features Atlassian gifted us this year. We did eventually write that post - you can see it here, but along the way we went down the blackhole of comparing AI tools.
The first idea was to have Rovo write the post for us. That led to the disappointing discovery that we don’t actually have Rovo. It’s a separate product, not included in our Premium plan. That button you see in Jira takes you to a sales page. Damn!
Okay, no problem. I do have Atlassian Intelligence in Confluence.
It complied and gave me a list of features. But something didn’t look right, so I asked it to add the release date:
Atlassian Intelligence, what is it about , “In 2024,” you don’t understand? And is that it?
Could it be it true? Have all the developers at Atlassian been sitting back and doing nothing since March? Surely not!
I went to admin.atlassian.com, Products > Product updates and filtered for completely rolled out improvements to Jira and Confluence in the last 48 weeks, and yeah, there’s a big-ass list:
Was I encountering the limits of Artificial Intelligence, or just of Atlassian Intelligence? I decided to ask ChatGPT what it thought Atlassian had done this year.
That seemed more like the year in Atlassian I remember having. (And I do love Confluence Databases!)
But why stop there? Let’s see what else ChatGPT can do.
I asked it to expand the list to 12 features. Then I asked it to tell me about the rhyme and meter structure of the song, The Twelve Days of Christmas. You see where I’m going… Sing along if you want:
The Twelve Features of Atlassian (2024 Edition)
(To the tune of "The Twelve Days of Christmas")
🎵
Verse 1
On the first day of Christmas, Atlassian gave my team:
A Custom Project Template.
Verse 2
On the second day of Christmas, Atlassian gave my team:
Two Whiteboards,
And a Custom Project Template
Verse 12
On the twelfth day of Christmas, Atlassian gave my team:
Twelve Databases (Beta),
Eleven AI Definitions,
Ten Space Dashboards,
Nine Smart Link Dashboards,
Eight Dark-Mode Boards,
Seven AI Automations,
Six Live-Edit Pages,
AI Work Break-downs,
Four Verified Pages,
Three Program Boards,
Two Whiteboards,
And a Custom Project Template!
You haven’t really given a tool, or for that matter a person, the opportunity to prove themself until you give it a challenge it can’t meet. There was an obvious next step:
I chose not to follow ChatGPT’s instructions. There is no one in the Atlassian ecosystem that I dislike enough to expose them to my singing (but if any of you sing, go for it).
So there you have it: ChatGPT 1 Atlassian Intelligence 0. Perhaps I’ll repeat this exercise next year to see if the score has changed.
