Start over or bulk copy 5 projects?

Rob Sargent February 6, 2023

It took me only 7 tries to migrate my local server Jira projects to the cloud.  Each round shortening the (quite helpful) error logs.  The last hint was to change the type of all the projects from software to "business".  I was astounded by the notion but quickly edited the project type of each project and sure enough the migration succeeded.

But now I have "business" projects which really are software projects.  And simply editing the type back to software is not an option.  Bulk copy into new projects is the only option (that I've found so far).

So: Should I, can I start over?  Or plough ahead with bulk copy?

Btw, how is it that "business" is the default?

Hey Rob,

A few things - Jira Core is the base level Jira product. That's what Business projects are. So everything is built on top of that - for instance Jira Software, Jira Service Management, etc.

But that doesn't explain why they would force you to change the project type. However, I see that you have a Free instance, so that's probably why. You would need a Jira Software subscription for those projects to migrate over. Which probably means a paid version - at least for 10 seats. But I am guess about that. So I am wondering if you did that, and then did the migration if it might not make you convert the projects. That would probably be worth a question to Atlassian support first though.

Anyway, where you are now, I would create a new Jira Software project and then migrate the issues using the bulk change process from the Business project to the Jira Software project. How many issues are we talking about on each project?

Only a  couple thousand, mainly in one of the projects.

(All are open source projects, genetic analysis software)

You could go either way then.

Yeah, I bit the bullet and delete everything and started over.  Reset the server projects to "software" and since I had jira software install, they all migrated without a hitch.

Sounds like a great decision!
