Can I have a JIRA New Feature contain a Story?

Andres Fernandez January 24, 2018

It seems New Feature and Story are at the same level of the Issue hierarchy.

Is it at all possible to re-order the hierarchy so that it's Epic > New Feature > Story ?

Basically making it equivalent to what we're used to with Rally?

Regards,

Andrew

No, this is not possible. The hierarchy "Epic" > "any issue type" > "any sub-issue type" is fixed.

If you need more levels probably you have to have a look on the structure plugin.

Yeah, we are looking at Structure.

Just surprised that I've been using JIRA for 8 years now and now that we're trying to consolidate on one platform, that Atlassian hasn't addressed another hierarchy level yet that I'm aware of, that would be possible without using the Structure plugin.

Reorganizing issue types according to your view of their hierarchies certainly has been asked before.

Hi Andres,

Different organizations have different needs for organizing their issues in Jira, and Atlassian decided to stick with the basic Epic-Story-Subtask hierarchy. You can get more levels on top of Epics with Portfolio for Jira. In Structure, we tried to address the needs of different teams by making it ultimately configurable and let the users decide what kind of hierarchy they need. However, it takes a little initial learning and configuration effort to get started.
