When I tried to upload a favicon, it says "Failed to upload image from file favicon.png. The MIME type image/png is unsupported. PNG, JPG and GIF images are the only supported formats."
I have similar issue and i have done any update to the version which allowed me to do it successfully 3-5 months ago now just refused without any messages.
