Upgraded to 8. I failed to test first (I know). I took backups, so that isn't the issue. I am installed on Windows, and I used to have a service. The upgrade did not retain the service, and I no longer have one. I tried to install the service from the Jira BIN directory, however that fails with an "8 was unexpected at this time"

Hey John,

Sorry you ran into this problem with the 8.0.0 upgrader. This is a known issue and tracked in JRASERVER-68865. I hope you were able to get Jira running manually after your upgrade with some of the info Kiran provided.

Going forward, this issue has been fixed in Jira 8.0.1 which was released this morning. If you are still having issues with the service not running, an upgrade from 8.0.0 to 8.0.1 should reinstall the service for you. The latest release is available at https://atlassian.com/software/jira/download

Cheers,
Daniel

Hi @John Lewis

I would recommend you to go through the requirements for JIRA 8 by visiting the below Atlassian KB articles.

If you are using the windows Installers, it would upgrade the JIRA and also create the Windows Service.

If you choose to run Jira as a service:

  • You must run the installer as administrator to be able to install Jira as a service.
  • The Jira service will be run as the Windows 'SYSTEM' user account.
  • We strongly recommend creating a dedicated user account (e.g. with username 'jira') on Windows for running Jira.

However, If for some reasons the installers did not create the service after the upgrade, I would suggest to follow the below instructions:

https://confluence.atlassian.com/adminjiraserver071/running-jira-applications-as-a-windows-service-802593173.html

I hope the information will be helpful.

Thanks,

Kiran.
