Migration from Microsoft Access DB

Smatt June 27, 2022

Hi All,

I'm looking to perform a migration from an Access DB that is current being used to log tickets into a Jira Service Management datacentre deployment.

One of the considerations would be whether the current Access DB has a single table or multiple related tables and what would need to be in place to support the migration of the latter.

Does anyone have any thoughts on how I would approach such a migration from Access with related tables?

Thanks in advance!

Hi @Smatt

Welcome to the Atlassian Community site. Here you will find your peers, Atlassian and Atlassian partners.

All answers given here are the opinion of the individual who will be doing their best to help you.

I work for Adaptavist an Atlassian Platinum partner and I regularly work with organisations on migrations.

For your scenario I would stop thinking in terms of tables and think instead of a ticket with associated information - leave JSM to sort out for itself how to store the information.

To migrate your existing content it is worth reviewing the information on importing from CSV.  See https://support.atlassian.com/jira-cloud-administration/docs/import-data-from-a-csv-file/ for the main details but also have a read around the rest of the documentation site.

I would start with a simple import of just creation date, summary and description then work out what other fields you want to use/import. As CSV can be done with a delta import as long as you always include the unique key initially created by Jira.

Hi Phill,

Thanks for your reply- really helpful.

I think in my head I was thinking about how the source data links might affect the migration but having had a bit more of an insight into that I think you're right and that I don't need to worry too much about how that data is stored within JSM.

We have text, drop-down and multi-selection lists that can all be populated so I'll look at setting up a test migration in the first instance.

The next thing I need to work out is the RBAC model, as I don't believe you can create restricted views within a project but I've seen products that can do that. Do you have any experience of those?
