Jira Cloud App for Slack, not possible for Portal only users?

Sergej November 12, 2020

It appears that users of our Portal are only able to utilize Jira through Slack if access to Jira Service Management is enabled. Apparently "Has access on site" is not enough. Is that as intended?

We are getting the following notification when trying to connect in Slack:

We didn’t find any Jira sites associated with your account.
If you are using Jira Server or Data Center, please click here.

That means on the free plan only 3 users will be able to use the Jira Cloud app in Slack.

Hi Sergej, welcome to the Community!

That's essentially correct; to link Slack and Jira accounts together, the account in question needs to be a licensed user of Jira. On the free plan, that means 3 agents in Jira Service Management, or 10 users in Jira Software or Jira Core. The "customer" user type in Jira Service Management (meaning they only have access to the portal, not to the agent side or Jira itself) does not have access to Jira and would be unable to utilize the Jira Cloud for Slack integration.

If you have a lot of users you're hoping to service in Slack directly, one possibility is utilizing Halp, which keeps the conversation in Slack but can be powered by Jira Service Management on the backend. That way tickets can be created for/by users in Slack, but you would not need to add everyone as an agent in Jira Service Management.

You can also make use of the 10 users available for Jira Software / Jira Core on the free tier if you only have a few users who need access to the integration. They don't necessarily need to be agents in Jira Service Management to use the Slack integration and see issue details / create issues from Slack - Jira Software or Jira Core access would also work.

Cheers,
Daniel

Thank you Daniel, that answers my question.

As we're new to this all and want to get familiar with everything before diving too deep and setting up subscriptions, I think the portal only way will work just fine for us (as I understand Halp also doesn't come free after the initial trial).
