I am currently the Product Owner of a team that manages two separate Jira boards: one for the Frontend (FE) team and one for the Backend (BE) team. The team has proposed merging these two boards into a single unified board to streamline our workflow. I need guidance on how to accomplish this without losing any existing tasks, issues, or data from either board. Additionally, I want to ensure that the new board will allow us to continue our work without disruption.

I would like to:

  1. Merge the tasks from both boards (FE and BE) into a single board.
  2. Maintain all current information, including task statuses and priorities.
  3. Ensure that the workflow and columns from both teams are properly integrated into the new board.
  4. Use this new board for all future work.

What steps should I follow to achieve this?

Hey Noel,

Just a heads up: creating a Board won't delete any tasks in any project. However, if you make changes to a task on Board A and that same task is also on Board B, the changes will be visible to anyone looking at Board B. This is because the changes are made to the actual task, not the board itself.

Sometimes, people find it confusing to understand the difference between projects, issues, and boards.

Please take note of the following information:

Issue: An issue is a task with specific attributes, a unique key, a workflow, and life cycle steps.

Project: A project is a container for issues related to a specific topic.

Filter: A filter is a pre-saved JQL query used to retrieve specific issues.

Dashboard: A dashboard is a tool for displaying a set of filtered issues, but it is just a view and does not modify the actual issues.

"Please note the following instructions:

1) Create a new filter with issues from projects FE and BE, save it, and share it with the relevant people or groups who will work with the future board.

2) Create a new board.

3) Configure your board. In the General tab, find the 'Select Filter' option and replace it with the filter created in Step 1.

4) Select the Columns tab, create the columns you need, and map the statuses you want to show under each column.

And that's it. Of course, there are many additional options, but this should be enough to get started.

Let me know if it works for you.

I'll be waiting for your feedback.

Cheers,
