Federating Jira for external users

Farida Musayeva May 22, 2020

Hello everyone ,

My company uses Jira with their own License for internal employees. But now one of our customers wants to use our Jira . And for data protection we have to find some solution. Is federating Jira a solution for this?

And  can two detached Jira instances (Windows / Linux) be set up on a same server?

Federating Jira can become expensive when you factor in the cost of add-on licenses on top of the additional Jira license. Although your user count may not be as high as the primary instance, it's another thing to consider.

@Nic Brough -Adaptavist-  is right, there are layers of security within Jira that you can use and possibly cover the use case.

Well, to my knowledge - customer willing to use your Jira - is quite a common case. Federation or multiple Jira instances for "data protection" might be just too-much. Did you consider just permissions, user-groups and proper roles setup?

There are several solutions to hook up different Jira instance for exchangeing defined data.

We run a cloud (external) instance and an internal Jira server connected via

https://www.k15t.com/software/backbone-issue-sync-for-jira

This allows for several use cases depending of what you want to achieve & hwo strict your security is. Contact the K15t guy. Great support & execellent presentation of covered use cases.

Yes, you can set up many instances on the same server, just need to ensure it has enough resources (memory and CPU) to cope with it.

Two federated Jira systems may not be the right answer though.  I'm afraid to get more advice, you'll need to explain what the "data protection" problems are and what you are trying to achieve with getting the customer access.
