Can I use a reverse proxy with multiple domains on a single Jira Service Desk instance?

Info Tech February 26, 2020

We have begun using a Jira Service Desk Starter License (Server) and are having problems using multiple domains on our IIS reverse proxy with Jira. The reverse proxy is configured properly and we use it for many other websites we host, but because the base url can only be set once for Jira, we're seeing errors whenever we access our Jira instance over any domains that don't match the base url. We have a license for Confluence (Server) as well and expect we will run into similar issues if we try the same thing with that website.

We are considering switching from our current helpdesk solution to Jira Service Desk. We currently service multiple companies at once from a single cloud service technician portal that uses multiple subdomains for different customer portals. We do not have a single domain name we can use for our onsite Jira installation because our IT group is effectively anonymous and we only handle IT support issues for multiple companies in our building. We need to use multiple domains with Jira Service Desk, but we're getting the impression this isn't going to be possible the way we were imagining it.

Are there any other options we could try for using a single Jira instance with multiple domains? If we paid for multiple Jira Service Desk licenses and had multiple installations, would there be some way to aggregate issues across them all into a single pool on a main instance? Is this something the cloud version of Jira could address?

Our helpdesk workflow involves logging into Salesforce and our helpdesk solution separately, so we were hoping to use a single Jira Service Desk instance for accepting tickets from multiple companies and also integrate Salesforce with it. We are ultimately trying to get away from logging into more than one system to access support tickets.

Thank you in an advance.

Interesting problem. Can't speak directly to this but have some thoughts that I hope are helpful.

It's probably worth reaching out to support/your rep for that one to see what can be done from an installation/billing standpoint.

There're add-ons that allow you to hide/show Customer Portal Request Types based on Jira groups. One approach that might work would be to have a single domain and just hide/show the request type for the appropriate folks based on custom groups they fall into (mirroring the companies).

Good luck and please share your solution if/when you arrive at one.
