Transition rule not working at all

Sunil Mistry November 28, 2024

Creating a simple transition rule which would only allow for tickets to moved from discovery done > ready for refinement is the delivery status field has a value.

For context this would only populate if someone has linked a delivery ticket.

Every rule I have tried just does not work, from any value to updating the assignee?

Hi @Sunil Mistry -- Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

What do you mean by "not working at all"?  What are you observing?

Are you trying to do this: for a JPD Idea workflow, added a transition validator rule which checks for a value in the field...and that is not preventing the transition?

Kind regards,
Bill

I've created a rule in the jira discovery board workflow, this rule states that a field has to be populated before it can be moved into the next step of the workflow.

This rule does not work, it allows a ticket to be moved regardless of whether the field is populated or not.

I have tried any type of rule and none work even just a simple 'assign to person' and this does not work.

Thanks for that information, @Sunil Mistry

I tried this and saw a UX error but the validator still stopped the transition.  The steps to reproduce this symptom were:

  • add a validator to the workflow to prevent transition if a select / option field was empty
  • saved the workflow changes and returned to a JPD list view
  • from a JPD list view, selected an Idea
  • in the right-side pane, changed the Status to transition the issue
    • the Status highlighted in red color
    • a pop-up showed the validation error
    • in the list view to the left, the Status did update on the page
  • when I refreshed the page, the Status returned to the original value
  • checking the history for the Idea, it did not actually transition to the new Status

Would you please post an image of your workflow and the validator you are trying to use?

This made the rule work but the when using a board view, the rule does not apply? Why is this?

You are correct, and this seems to be a related symptom of the same defect.  Here are the steps to reproduce it:

  • add a validator to the workflow to prevent transition if a select / option field is empty
  • save the workflow changes and return to a JPD board view
  • from a JPD board view, with columns as Status, select an Idea where the select / option field is empty
  • drag the Idea to the destination Status for the validator
    • expected result
      • a validator message shows the error
      • the Idea returns to the previous Status column
    • actual result
      • no error message is shown
      • the Idea remains in the new column
  • refresh the page
    • actual result:
      • the Idea returns to the previous Status column

This doesn't replicate what I am trying to do, it is a simple rule which should stop tickets being moved to a different status but none of the rules work
